In the series finale of Gossip Girl (“New York, I Love You XOXO”), we begin at the scene of the crime: Bart Bass (Robert John Burke) has just fallen off the building, and Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) and Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) run away because they’re worried they could be charged with murder, even though they didn’t really do anything except not help him. All of the cars at the event are being stopped, so Georgina Sparks (Michelle Trachtenberg) talks to Chuck’s driver. Cut to the police asking him where Chuck is and he’s saying he hasn’t seen them. They’re holding each other tight in the trunk, though.
Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley) sends a text to Daphne at Vanity Fair, saying he has his final chapter but he’s waiting on one person to get back to him. Cut to Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) reading the paper he slipped in her bag before she left. She tells the flight attendant of her private jet to tell the pilot to hold the plane.
Meanwhile, Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford) and Sage Spence (Sofia Black-D’Elia) are continuing their search for Gossip Girl’s identity.
The next morning, Jack Bass (Desmond Harrington) finds Chuck and Blair in a hotel suite. He asks Chuck if he killed Bart, and Chuck says he didn’t help him. Jack gives them the idea of getting married because a spouse can’t be forced to testify against her husband when they do end up getting questioned. He gets down on one knee, grabs the engagement ring she’s been wearing patiently around her neck, and says, “Blair Cornelia Waldorf, will you marry me?” Of course she says yes!
After reading his love letter chapter, Serena goes to Dan and says that she’s more confused than ever about their relationship. She tells him that he needs to explain everything to him. So, he begins telling about the first time he saw her looking gorgeous at a party. He then Dan tells the story about the time he overheard some girls talking about Serena’s white dress getting wet on a school field trip. One girl said she would be the laughing stock of the school but the other girl said she would be fine because you’re no one until you’re talked about. That’s when he reveals he went home to Jenny, and Gossip Girl was created.
